The very first day of my study abroad program in London, we had a long timetable of different lectures and informational sessions that we would be attending. Around 2 pm, we sat in a classroom and met with a local police officer who then informed us of all the different things to be aware of while living in London.

At the top of his list, was pick-pocketing.

Although not quite as common in the US as it is in Europe, learning how to be aware of your surroundings and take preventative actions against pick-pocketing will insure that you come home along with your wallet.

1. Be aware of your surroundings

One of the main reasons that tourists are often targeted by pick-pockets is because they’re usually not paying attention. Regardless of what is happening in front of you, always be aware of who is around you.

Watching a street performance? Who is behind you?

Searching your phone for directions? Is anyone around you?

Simply being more aware of your surroundings will allow you to be cognizant of potential pick-pockets targeting you for your stuff. Pick-pockets want to strike when you will be most distracted like boarding a crowded train in Paris or taking pictures in front of the Colosseum in Rome. So always be aware of who is around you and where your belongings are at all times.

2. Take preventative measures

Pick-pockets are looking for easy targets. They want to be in and out with your stuff before you’ll ever notice. They are also VERY good at it. Your wallet will be in their pockets before you can even tap out of the tube. Luckily, there are preventative measures that will quickly cross you off their list.

• Wear your bags in front of you in crowded areas
• Consider getting travel-safety friendly purses and backpacks, that have locks and preventative measures to keep thieves away (I saw so many of these around Italy! https://www.amazon.com/Backpack-Anti-Theft-Charging-Resistant-Business/dp/B072ZXD8LD)
• Never carry too much cash or valuables on you
• Leave your passport in a safe location
• Never leave your stuff unattended at a pub, store, etc.

According to Rick Steves, experienced traveler and blogger, he says the most important things to remember to outsmart pick-pockets are to stay vigilant and keep your things secure.

It’s hard to think about the potential dangers when you’re standing in front of the Vatican, but just remember to always be aware and take preventative measures and you and your belongings should make it home.
